OVERVIEW

 

Pediatric first aid refers to the immediate and appropriate medical care provided to infants and children during emergencies or instances of injury or illness. It aims to stabilize the child’s condition and minimize the potential risks until professional medical help arrives. Pediatric first aid involves a range of essential skills and knowledge, including assessing the child’s condition, and performing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) if necessary. Proper training and understanding of pediatric first aid are crucial for parents, caregivers, teachers, and anyone involved in the care of children, as they can potentially save lives and prevent further harm in critical situations.

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a pediatric first aider
  • Be able to assess an emergency safely
  • Be able to provide first aid for an infant and an unresponsive child
  • Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is choking
  • Be able to provide first aid to an infant and a child with external bleeding
  • Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child who is suffering from shock
  • Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child with bites, stings, and minor injuries
  • Identify the role and responsibilities of a pediatric first aider.
  • Identify how to minimize the risk of infection to self and others
  • Differentiate between an infant and a child for first aid treatment
  • Conduct a scene survey.
  • Conduct a primary survey on:
  • an infant
  • a child
  • Summon appropriate assistance when necessary
  • Identify when to administer CPR to a child or infant
  • Demonstrate CPR using infant/child manikin
  • Identify when to place an infant or a child into the recovery position
  • Demonstrate continual monitoring of breathing
  • Identify how to administer first aid to an infant or a child who is experiencing a seizure
  • Identify when an infant or a child is choking, and how to administer first aid
  • Identify whether external bleeding is life-threatening, and Demonstrate how to administer first aid
  • Recognize when an infant or a child is suffering from shock, and how to administer first aid
  • Identify how to administer first aid to an infant or a child for Bites, Stings, Small cuts, Grazes, Bumps and bruises, Small splinters, and Nosebleeds
