Overview

This training develops the basic knowledge and practical response skills required when working in an environment that could become contaminated by hydrogen sulphide (H2S).

Learners study the properties and hazards of H₂S, detection and respiratory-protection equipment, alarm response, and the safe use of escape equipment.

Target Audience

Personnel who work, or may work, in an environment that could become contaminated by H2S gas.

Entry Requirements

No formal training prerequisite is stated. Learners must be capable of participating in the practical and potentially stressful training activities and complete the centre's medical screening requirements.

The course has two main learning outcomes:

Outcome 1: H2S Hazards and Emergency Response

How H2S is formed, its common names, and where it may be found

Physical properties and characteristics of H2S

Parts per million and occupational or workplace exposure limits

Physiological effects of exposure and individual susceptibility

H2S detection and the use of onsite and personal detectors

Actions required when an alarm activates

Escape breathing apparatus, self-contained breathing apparatus, and mask fit

The role of emergency-response teams

Outcome 2: Practical Use of Essential Equipment

Pre-use checks and operation of personal H2S detectors

Responding to an H2S alarm

Donning and operating escape breathing apparatus with a mask

Donning and operating escape breathing apparatus with a hood

Connecting to and disconnecting from a pressurised cascade breathing system
